Your Guide to the Ultimate Vacation Hair

The hustle and bustle of the holidays are over, New Years Eve has come and gone, and now it’s time for us all to just chill out. And with the Toronto winter on its way (albeit, a little late to the party this year!) I bet you’ll be flocking to some place warm for some sun and sand in the next couple of months.

That means we need to talk about vacation hair.

There’s a little bohemian in each of us, and when we go away we get to let that boho shine. When you’re on vacation you want to look perfect, like you don’t have to care because everything is perfect… And you know what? It’s absolutely true. You never look better than when you’re all sun kissed, wild and free.

There is nothing sexier than the beach bum vibes of wearing almost nothing and letting your hair do what it will in the hot island breeze. But we all know that that perfect beach hair doesn’t just happen on it’s own. In fact, it can sometimes be the hardest thing to pull off while you’re away. Don't sweat, together we will make your perfect look as easy and breezy as that perfect getaway you’ve got planned.

What To Pack

Vacation hair is all about management. As in managing your mane, getting that great look and keeping those locks healthy while you’re away from your toolbox.

Sun, salt and sand can do serious damage to your hair, so you want to be constantly moisturizing and the products that you take with you should be heavier on moisture than your usual regime.

If I were on a desert island and I could only bring 3 hair products my absolute must-have’s would be an Aveda trifecta of Brilliant leave-in conditioning spray, Damage Remedy hair repair cream, and the new Shampure dry shampoo.

The dry shampoo is just gorgeous. If you’re doing a lot of swimming then you don’t really want to be washing your hair since the salt will clean your hair.

You do want to give your hair a good rinse and a condition at the end of the day to get the salt off and add some moisture to sun soaked hair. That’s where a good thick conditioner like Damage Remedy comes into play. You really have to go thicker than you normally would because just like your skin, your hair will be dry after a day in the sun.

And finally, take that Brilliant damage control leave-in spray everywhere you go and give yourself a healthy dose each time you get out of the water. That way, when you let your hair air-dry you’ll get nice and flowing beach waves and avoid nasty tangles.

As for styling tools, take this opportunity to leave the blow drier at home. Your hair will dry quickly in the heat so the only thing you really need to bring is a styling wand to polish those beach waves for a night out on the town.

How To Wear That Good Beach Hair

The best part about being away is that you can do whatever you want and the same goes for your hair. And with that good beach hair and bohemian vibes you can have fun with your mane and look absolutely stunning with minimal effort. You’re going to look awesome regardless of what you do with that good beach hair, but if you’re looking to try something new here are a few great vacation styles that might inspire you:

Braids

This is a great go-to for everyone because they are infinitely versatile. They’re a great day-to-night style, you can do them up or down, big or small, and they’re good for all hair types.

If you have course or unruly hair then the idea of letting your hair blow in the wind all afternoon at the beach probably sounds like a bad idea because at the end of the day your head will be tangle city. If that’s you, consider giving it a generous spritz of leave-in when you get out of the water and braid it to keep it in check, especially on a windy day.

Braids are also really great for fine, straight hair. If you let your hair air-dry in a braid then at the end of the day you’ll have a nice wave to play with at night.

Half Buns

So on point right now, but not everyone likes the fashion-forward look of a half bun in the city.

On the beach though, the half bun goes from hipster to hippie and gives you a completely different look. So if you’re hesitant to do this one at home, give it a try! I mean, you’re on vacation.

Beach Waves

The easiest of them all because you just let your hair do what it will. Well, basically.

After swimming, spray it down with your leave-in conditioner and let it air-dry in the sun. Add in some Aveda Phomollient Styling foam for some extra definition if you need a little boost, and at the end of the day polish off some of those lovely tresses with your wand for a picture perfect evening look.

Wherever you go, whatever you do this vacation season I hope you have an amazing time and come back relaxed, rejuvenated and ready to take 2016 by storm.

Bon Voyage!
